Florida Credit Card Skimming Data Prices

Credit Card Skimming is a known problem and around for a long time, despite all the countless improvements in design, hardware, and software surrounding credit card use and credit card business.

In the early days, credit card skimming was done by running two carbon copies of a credit card information. One to keep and eventually use, the other for the credit card holder.

Today it is a small hand held magstripe reader operated by a worker when the credit card holder is not watching his card.

Skimming is still used today and best to prevent it, is to not allow your credit card out of site and making sure that no double charge or any kind of extra copy is left behind.

In the US it’s a lucrative business as wholesalers peddle this data to credit card counterfeiters for as much has $50 US-Dollar for a US corporate Visa or Mastercard. European and Asian corporate credit cards are even high in price.

What’s the person getting for making the credit card copy at his or her workplace?

Thanks to Florida court documents showing the wide range of payments depending on the diner or restaurant the skimming came from before the Feds stopped it. It is a selection found on wired dot com:

Too many middlemen depressed the price for Daniel Argueta, who, until February, was a server at this Asian restaurant in a Miami mall. At the top level, a buyer named “Warijo” was paying a decent $20 for skimmed cards. But there were two more layers of crooks between Argueta and Warijo, and by the time they all took their piece, the waiter was making less than the menu price of a Tuna Tataki. Meanwhile, the fruits of Argueta’s labor were used to ring up $30,000 in bogus charges on 43 cloned cards — or about $700 a piece.

Last month an alert customer at one of the chicken chain’s Miami stores spotted a worker skimming his card behind the counter. When the cops arrived, the sticky fingered employee initially claimed he was innocent, then cracked like a poultry egg when the Secret Service appeared with their crisp suits and a few more questions. After turning over his Mini-123 magstripe reader, the worker told the agents that he’d been offered $10 per credit card by a guy from the neighborhood, who was quickly rounded up.

In March, Alex Garcia admitted to the feds that he’d tuned his fast food income by skimming the credit cards from drive-through patrons. He’d been recruited by a customer — “want to make some extra money?”. Alex got $10 for each credit card,  but having volume he made an extra $7000 by selling the skimmed credit card data.

Now we’re getting into some real money. Waiter Evolio Mechado got his skimmer from a contact he knew as “Chispa,” who slipped him a Jackson for every swipe. Last April the Secret Service, following up an informant’s tip, nailed Mechado, turned him, busted Chispa, turned Chispa, then set up the alleged mastermind of the ring, one Ivan Banguela. On the drive to jail, Banguela complained to the agents that he’d been having trouble finding a real job.

It comes as surprise to see fried patties beat out flame broiled Whoppers and quality Latin fare. Hernandez Gonzalez was given $30 per skimmed credit card by someone named “Arturo” at the drive-through at a Miami McDonalds last month. Gonzales was caught as a customer noticed a fraudulent charge after his visit to the golden arche. The customer requested the manager to go over the surveillance tapes on the day of his visit.
